“We jumped at the chance to be a sponsor again this year!”
—Julie Tremblay, General Manager, RED Academy
We’re thrilled to welcome RED Academy back as our UX For Good sponsor in 2018. RED Academy—a technology and design school with locations in Vancouver, Toronto, and London—gives students the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and build a portfolio of real work in an agency environment.
Through collaboration with local non-profit organizations, RED Academy cohorts deploy their design thinking to drive social change. To date, students have contributed $3.2 million to social impact, all while building strong portfolios that have eased their entry into the workforce. Graduates of the UX and UI, Digital Marketing, and Web and App Development programs have gone on to work for Amazon, Samsung, AutoTrader, Canadian Tire, and more. “It really is fulfilling to be on this journey, continuing to grow our network and seeing our alumni coming back to hire our new grads to join the tech industry,” notes Julie Tremblay, General Manager of RED Academy Vancouver school.
In addition to all things technical, students gain mentors in their industry, and the skills to continue learning and troubleshooting as their industry changes. “In a future of AI and in a rapidly evolving industry, we want to see people leveraging creativity, empathy, and collaboration,” Julie explains. “Those are the skills humans will need in the future”. Where traditional education focuses on unidirectional methods of teaching, RED Academy takes a more holistic approach. "Students don't come here to sit through a lecture and only learn how to code. Our programming emphasizes experiential learning, collaboration, and social good."
For Julie, a highlight of last year’s event was presenting the UX For Good Award to Kudoz, a platform that connects individuals with cognitive disabilities to volunteers wanting to share skills and exciting in-person experiences. "Our students had the opportunity to work with Kudoz as a Community Partner. Knowing that the work of our students may have influenced the overall approach and direction for this amazing project made it a really exciting moment to open the envelope and see their name.”
The Awards, she notes, have been a great opportunity to grow RED Academy’s network of instructors and advisory board members. Students have also benefited from the opportunity to connect with the greater UX community, share their work, and even meet hiring partners. After such a positive experience last year, Julie says they jumped at the chance to be involved again in 2018.
