What motivated you to host the 2023 Vancouver UX Awards?

It is always a pleasure to engage our creative industries and celebrate the power of design. Design professionalism is a cross disciplinary and international goal, seeing effective UX design is a wonderful way to showcase talent, quality work, and positive social impact.

How has your work with local indigenous communities changed your perspective on community design?

Working with indigenous communities and organizations at the local and international level provides deeper appreciation of the necessity of true inclusivity and reconciliation. It is no longer good enough to merely consult with those our work affects, it is our obligation to ensure seats are at decision making tables for all those we wish to serve. Inclusivity is a practice, not a check box.

What does design leadership mean to you?

Whether you are a partner in an agency, a leader of a design organization, or a veteran freelancer, none of us have gotten to where we are without the support, guidance, and mentorship from others. Once any of us have reached a career point we had earlier dreamt of, it is our obligation to send the elevator back down and lift others up that are chasing their own dreams.

As an active member of Vancouver’s design community for decades, what changes have you seen in the community that are inspiring?

It is the little things that slowly burn and build into change over time. Although there is much work needed and yet to be done, seeing evolving changes in policy, design literacy, public awareness, and appreciation of the value of quality design experiences is continuing to inspire and motivate me today.
